How Terrence Cody Will Have Altered College Football

One of the biggest guys in college sports a year ago, Terrence Cody, at 6 foot 4 inches tall and 350 pounds, has altered how colleges evaluate larger players. A exceptional run stopper makes a world of difference for football squads wanting to free up their linebackers.

It’s my opinion that increasingly more we will have enormous players, certainly like Terrence Cody, arriving onto the scene in college football. A huge fella at that size in the middle of the defense actively playing nosetackle or middle guard is an extremely precious resource.

Now don’t get me wrong, people the size of Terrence Cody with his explosiveness do not come around every day. The NFL football team, the Baltimore Ravens found superb potential in this big man’s actual physical talents, size, and quickness enough to draft him at number 57 in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft.

It’s actually not merely proportions which makes the big difference in a fellow like this,it is also the quickness. The quick first step from the line, when combined with the leverage of the bodyweight, it is pure physics of mass times acceleration equals momentum… and momentum he does have!

The Baltimore Ravens witnessed a substantial drop-off in it’s run defense the very first time this past year, 2009. Running back Cedric Benson of the Cincinnati Bengals rushed for the first hundred yard game against the heralded Ravens defense in over 39 games. Part of the reason is the light middle of the defensive front. In 2010,the coaches of the Ravens knew that they needed the big man up the center of their defense to free things up and so they drafted massive “Mount Cody”.

Look for big things (no pun intended) out of Mount Cody in the NFL, as well as other massive guys doing a lot more in college football. Recruiting will heat up for these kinds of players because it proved successful for the Alabama Crimson Tide in winning a 2009 national championship.

So the very next time you think about good defense, see if you’re able to locate a nearby mountain and take a look at it. Your chosen college football team will most likely be searching for the same thing but only a tad bit more human!
