It used to be that SUVs were considered too big, too expensive, and took too much gas to really be a viable alternative for large active families. That is no longer the case. Manufacturers heard those complaints and they responded in a big way, developing several compact SUVs that are easy to buy, easy to handle, and easy on the wallet.
